Welcome to our Blogspot! A handful of the teachers at Memorial wanted to READ and then meet monthly to chat about some great books. We thought we would share the titles and thoughts here on this blog and if students have read some of the same books or are interested in reading them, then you are more than welcome to chime in.
Our first book was We Beat the Street: How a Friendship Pact Let to Success, by Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt. It is the true story of how three friends 'growing up in street-tough Newark, NJ was not an easy experience.' The struggles, peer pressure, and challenges they faced led them to agree to a pact to succeed in school, go to college, and become doctors. With each others support, they "beat the street".
Something I really liked about this book is that the action starts right away! In the first chapter one of the main characters goes to the ER and is worried the doctors might need to cut off his leg! The boys in this story have a lot of funny and difficult things happen to them during their years of school.
ReplyDeleteAs a teacher I loved reading this story because it shows how far kids can go when they grow up and believe in themselves. I also think it's a great book for students to read because it shows you how to accomplish your goals even if they are hard work and seem almost impossible.
I really liked this book because it was an easy read and you really felt like you knew the characters and what they were going through. Each character meets many challenges and makes many mistakes throughout the book, yet they still reach their goal of becoming doctors. Such a strong message sent that you can overcome any obstacle/setback if you put your mind to it.
ReplyDeleteThe characters were up against some really negative influences and environments and yet they were able to get themselves out with the pact they made. I also like how once they achieved their dream, they returned to their communities to give back and show other kids they can achieve their dreams if they want to. There is always a way! Such a great book!
